Do you need to claim stimulus check money? Why you need this letter from the IRS first

You may not be able to claim your missing payment during tax season without these details.

Still missing stimulus money, from either the first or second round of payments? Don’t worry — the IRS has a plan in place. You can claim the amount you’re eligible for (up to $1,200 per person for the first check or up to $600 per person for the second) when you file your federal taxes this year, as a Recovery Rebate Credit

To claim your missing money, you’ll need information from a letter the IRS mailed to you a few weeks after it issued your stimulus check money (use our calculator to find out how much you should have received in a first or second check). But what happens if you never received that letter, or if you lost it or threw it away?

We’ve got everything you need to know about how to get a copy of the IRS information needed to claim any missing stimulus money on your taxes. Also, here’s more information on how you’ll file for the stimulus credit, why you might want to file your taxes early and set

BenQ HT3550i 4K projector review: Sharp and colorful, needs more pop

Powered by 4K resolution and the inherent sharpness of DLP, the BenQ HT3550i home theater projector puts up exquisite detail. On a 100-inch screen I saw individual hairs, the specific weaves in fabric and wrinkles galore. It’s also one of the most color-accurate projectors I’ve recently reviewed, with rich and vibrant reds, greens, blues and everything in between. These two aspects of performance make for a pleasingly realistic image.

Like

  • Excellent detail
  • Vibrant, accurate colors
  • Clean image with little video noise
  • Built-in Android TV streaming

Don’t Like

  • Not particularly bright
  • Mediocre contrast ratio

Compared to competitors in other ways, however, the HT3550i struggles. Its contrast ratio is on the low side of average, and brightness is far lower than many similar projectors, including the Optoma UHD30 and BenQ’s own BenQ HT2050A. Without bright whites and dark blacks the image simply lacks pop. The HT3550i doesn’t look bad in any specific way, it’s just that its strengths — including built-in Android TV streaming — can’t offset its weaknesses.

Basic specs

  • Native resolution: 3,840×2,160
  • HDR-compatible: Yes
  • 4K-compatible: Yes
  • 3D-compatible: Yes
  • Lumens spec: 2,000 (ANSI)
  • Zoom: Manual (1.3x)
  • Lens shift: Manual
  • Lamp life (Normal mode): 4,000 hours

The HT3550i is a

Never mind your tax refund. Stimulus checks are why you should file early this year

The faster you file your taxes, the sooner you’ll see that stimulus green.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Of course, you’ll likely get your federal tax refund sooner if you file sooner to the time the IRS starts processing returns on Feb. 12 than to the April 15 deadline. But this year, you have two additional reasons to start preparations ahead of time for tax season 2020By setting up direct deposit with the IRS, you’ll mostly likely receive your third stimulus check sooner, especially a new stimulus payment arrives during tax season. By filing as early as you can, you’ll also be able to recover any unpaid stimulus check money you’ve been owed since the Jan. 15 IRS deadline.

At least 8 million people who should’ve been eligible for stimulus check money didn’t receive the check they were due — and millions more may not have gotten all the funds they were entitled to — because of a clerical error or some other issue. Some folks had problems with custody and child support, missing money for child dependents in general, or accidental garnishment.

Whatever your individual situation, we’ll explain how filing early can help you

Homebrew: How to install post-exploitation tools on macOS

We’ll guide you through the process of using Homebrew package manager to install post-exploit security tools on macOS to further assess compromised system vulnerabilities found in your Apple equipment.

In this final article in the Homebrew series, we look at the availability of post-exploit tools you can use to further assess vulnerabilities in computing devices. You can use these to continue following the attack chain in an effort to establish permission escalation, persistence, and pivot from one compromised system to another, extending the attack throughout the network.

This part of the engagement is not about compromising the system initially: That is the exploit phase. But the post-exploit process deals with the initial level of access obtained on the compromised system and evolving it into something far more in order to obtain as much data on the underlying system and any hosts that might be communicating with it over the same network segment and beyond.

By using the proper tools, security admins and penetration testers can perform a deep dive on the system and continue the attack on subsequent systems encountered during the additional reconnaissance process

2021 Lexus IS 300 review: Still so close to greatness

The IS 300 is one attractive sedan.

Steven Ewing/Roadshow

Despite the company’s focus on crossovers and SUVs, Lexus does still make sport sedans. Bypass the brand’s family-haulers and you’ll find the compact IS, a sweetly styled four-door that’s been heavily refreshed for 2021.

Like

  • Responsive chassis
  • Extremely quiet cabin
  • Racy looks

Don’t Like

  • Infotainment remains lackluster
  • No interior storage
  • Aging transmission stymies performance

I say “heavily refreshed” because, while the IS’ underpinnings and engine options are mostly the same as before, the sheetmetal gets a fantastic makeover. In short, the IS looks awesome. The Grecian Water blue of my IS 300 tester is gorgeous, and the redesigned spindle grille neatly tucks between the new headlights. I never thought I’d end up liking Lexus’ huge grille, but it really works on the IS. There’s a nice little kick toward the rear when you view the car in profile, which emphasizes the wider hips. The fact that the LED running lights span the width of the trunk help with that wide stance, too.

The IS’ platform might be the same, but Lexus’ engineers made a number of tweaks to the suspension components and increased body rigidity for better overall handling. It works,

8 million nonfilers may have to file taxes this year if they want their stimulus check

Even if you don’t usually have to file a federal tax return, you’ll need to this year if you’re trying to claim missing stimulus money.

Angela Lang/CNET

The IRS relies heavily on tax return information to determine who qualifies to receive a stimulus check and for how much. That makes it tricky if you’re one of the millions of nonfilers in the US; people who aren’t required to file an annual income tax return. In fact, the White House estimates that at least 8 million people didn’t get a stimulus check

To drive home the point, President Joe Biden on Friday signed an executive order asking the Treasury to consider making it easier for this group of “nonfilers” to receive their second payments of up to $600 per person. It is not clear what the Treasury will do, For now, the easiest way for nonfilers to claim their money is to actually file 2020 taxes this year, using the IRS’ Recovery Rebate Credit.

We’ll walk you through everything you need to know, including why your second stimulus check may be missing (a direct deposit mistake, change of home addresschild dependent not counted,
