Whether lawmakers can reach an agreement to pass new economic rescue package by the end of 2020 is a moving target of a timeline we don’t yet know. Congress returns from recess after Thanksgiving and will only work for a limited number of days in Washington next month. However, stimulus negotiations could pick up again after Nov. 30, which would allow just enough time to approve a smaller bill. If it did include a second stimulus check, the IRS could start issuing payments between now and the new year.
There’s currently strong support among top lawmakers and leaders for another direct payment of up to $1,200 per person, including President-elect Joe Biden, who advanced his own stimulus plan and who will be inaugurated on Jan. 20.
