Second stimulus check: What’s the timeline for another payment now?

The House of Representatives is now on recess after passing a new stimulus bill on Thursday and can reconvene any time to vote. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin are continuing to negotiate by phone to agree on the details of the next economic aid package, which is expected to include a second stimulus check of up to $1,200 for qualified people

On Friday, President Donald Trump was hospitalized with COVID-19, and has since put his weight behind working out a deal. “Our great USA wants & needs stimulus,” Trump’s Twitter account posted on Saturday. “Work together and get it done. Thank you!”

Trumps’s health is directly related to how quickly the IRS could tee up the next stimulus check, if an agreement is made and a bill passes the House and Senate while he convalesces. Trump — or Vice President Mike Pence, if Trump were to become incapacitated — would also need to sign the bill into law before the IRS could create a schedule for delivering a second payment.
