TiVo Stream 4K review: Affordable Android streamer with HBO Max, Peacock

Roku and Amazon Fire TV make the best affordable streaming devices, but both still lack support for two of the biggest new services, HBO Max and Peacock. We have no idea when those apps will appear, but if you own a Roku or Fire TV, maybe you’re sick of waiting. Enter the TiVo Stream 4K. This streamer costs $50 — cheaper than other options with Max and Peacock, like the Apple TV or a brand-new smart TV — and of course it streams thousands of other apps, too, from Netflix to YouTube to Sling TV

Like

  • Affordable for 4K HDR streaming
  • Has apps for HBO Max and Peacock
  • Google Assistant works well for voice search
  • Great remote
  • Stream app aggregates different services

Don’t Like

  • Failed to work with one TV we tested
  • Not compatible with existing TiVo devices
  • More complex menus than Roku

TiVo made its name with DVRs to record cable and antenna TV broadcasts, but the Stream 4K is not a DVR at all. It’s a media streamer that competes directly against two of our favorite such devices, the Roku Streaming Stick Plus and the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K. It runs the Android TV

How to know if you’re one of the qualifying adults who could get a second stimulus check

Congress hasn’t yet agreed who’ll be eligible to receive a second stimulus check, but it’s expected that more people will be included the second time around.

Sarah Tew/CNET

There’s still hope that a new stimulus bill or an executive order will authorize a second stimulus check, but the eligibility requirements may not be the same as they were with the first stimulus check. And that could be a good thing.

As with the first round of direct payments, factors including your yearly income and the number of dependents you have that can’t get their own stimulus check will probably guide how much money you could get, even if you receive Social Security Disability Insurance or don’t normally file taxes. (And there’s still time to file a claim to get that first payment if you never did.)

There is one demographic that could be eligible to help the family group toward a larger check, if a second direct payment is authorized — read on for more details. CNET’s stimulus check calculator can also help you estimate how much could be in a second payment for you. And here are some steps to follow if your first stimulus check never

Live TV streaming services are designed to replace cable TV by letting you stream live channels over the internet. That’s great, but this newfangled way of getting TV is in a state of constant flux. Big names like YouTube TV and AT&T are either increasing the prices of their plansremoving or adding large chunks of programming or bowing out altogether. Amid all of the turmoil there’s one service that sticks out as a potential oasis for the budget-conscious cord-cutter: Sling TV. But it’s also the most convoluted, so let’s explain.

Like

  • Solid selection of channels for the price
  • Numerous choices and add-ons
  • Optional $99 AirTV 2 tuner for local channels

Don’t Like

  • No local channels beyond NBC and Fox in a few cities
  • Package options can be confusing
  • Limited DVR
  • AirTV 2 has several caveats, including no live TV pause

What makes Sling TV confusing is that there are essentially two main plans for the same $30 price: Sling Orange and Sling Blue. They share many of the same channels (like CNN, History and TNT) but other channels are exclusive to one or the other. Sling TV Blue is essentially the Fox and NBC option, while
