Origin PC Eon15-X review: 12 cores, if you need them

Origin PC takes “desktop replacement” seriously. Like the Alienware Area-51m, and its ilk, the company’s Eon15-X and Eon17-X incorporate desktop CPU and GPUs into powerful but power-hungry laptops. Intended to move at most from outlet to outlet rather than from conference room to coffee shop, battery life takes a back seat to performance. The Eon15-X is a reasonably priced midrange model with midrange graphics and one headliner: It incorporates AMD’s latest desktop processors, including a 12-core Ryzen 9 3900.

  • Extremely fast CPU
  • Calibrated display

Don’t Like

  • Fans are loud except in Quiet mode, which is too slow
  • No Thunderbolt 3 support and only one USB-C port
  • Small right Shift key near arrow keys and trackpad placement result in accidental cursor movement

There are some advantages to using the desktop parts; for example, consumer mobile parts like the new Intel i9-10980HK and AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS, the latter in the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 we tested, top out at eight cores. (A workstation CPU like the Intel Xeon W-10855M has 12 cores, but that adds a hefty price premium for features you probably don’t need.)

That’s not a big deal for most gamers, but, for instance, if you

2020 Cadillac CT4-V first drive review: More of the same

How could the 2020 Cadillac CT4-V ever fill the beloved ATS-V’s shoes? Instead of a 464-horsepower V6, it only comes with a four-cylinder engine. In lieu of an available six-speed stick, Caddy’s latest and greatest is automatic-only. In many ways — at least, on paper — this car is a big step back from its forbear.

The ATS family was a delight to drive — nimble, crisp and responsive. But building on that excellent foundation, the CT4 rides on an updated version of the ATS’s underlying architecture. Accordingly, it’s also light on its feet and plenty engaging. Aside from the annoying name change (I keep typing ATS instead of CT4), the car should be a softer, friendlier version of the V-Series and it still leaves plenty of room for the upcoming Blackwing model to really blow us all away.

It’s got a truck engine

The CT4-V is powered by a truck engine. That sentence sounds ominous, but don’t worry. This is nowhere near as bad as you think.

Mounted neatly between this high-performance Cadillac’s front fenders is a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a powerplant that debuted in the

A second IRS stimulus check is in the works. Here’s where we stand with Round 2

When the first wave of coronavirus stimulus checks was announced, the assumption was that it was a one-time deal to help prop up the economy. That may no longer be the case. A second round of stimulus payments to put more money in your pocket is now under consideration in Congress, even as the IRS continues to send the last batch of economic relief checks. Whether or not this second stimulus payment gets signed into law is another question.

This new relief act — proposed last week by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and passed by the House of Representatives — is fueled by rising concerns about the economy and people’s ability to pay for basic needs. In Senate testimony earlier this week, Jerome Powell, chair of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, called for additional economic relief.

The US economy has is already staggering from coronavirus closures that have put millions of Americans out of work and ground businesses to a halt. The US Bureau of
