August Wi-Fi Smart Lock review: Built-in Wi-Fi and 45% smaller

August smart locks are popular, and for good reason. The retrofit design makes them easy to install without replacing your existing deadbolt. It’s smart enough to work with smart home setups for Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit and Amazon Alexa. We gave multiple generations of August locks our Editors’ Choice Award for their easy installation, great app and smart home integration. Now, there’s a new one on the scene. Hello, August Wi-Fi Smart Lock.

Like

  • Smaller design.
  • Wi-Fi built in.
  • Smoother mechanics.
  • Works with Google, Alexa and Siri.

Don’t Like

  • Still expensive.
  • Shorter battery life.

Slimmed down and further smartened, it’s the best one yet. It comes with built-in Wi-Fi, negating the need for the extra August Connect ($58 at Amazon) plug-in modules. At $250, the new lock is pricey but it’s in the same price range as the previous generation lock, and well worth your money if you’re looking to get your front door online.

I popped it onto the back of my door and lived with it for a week. Here’s what you need to know.

Smaller smart lock design

August’s unique retrofit design stays true to its roots in this fourth-generation model. What’s remarkably

Got a new iPhone SE? Do these 9 things right away

The new iPhone SE is officially out and it has an iPhone 8 body with an iPhone 11 Pro brain. But it’s more than just an iPhone 8S or 9 with just an internal spec bump. The powerful A13 Bionic chipset transforms the phone and brings new features never before seen on a 4.7-inch iPhone ($699 at Apple)

The mix of old design and new power means you can unlock the new SE with Touch ID, which is handy now that face masks are a must. You also have the processing power to support future iOS software updates longer than an iPhone 8, with its 2-and-a-half-year old A11 processor, will manage.

Here are nine things you should try with your new iPhone SE.

1. Transfer your old phone’s date without iCloud or iTunes

Probably the absolute first thing you’re going to want to do is get your stuff off your old iPhone and onto your new one. If it’s been a while since you transferred data, you have a few options.

The first would be to back up your old phone to iTunes and then

Did you know that the US Postal Service will show you a picture of your IRS stimulus check once it’s been processed in the mail? This is a neat, easy and completely free way to see when your payment is coming. Is there a catch? Not really, but you do need to know that you’re eligible for the stimulus check, capped at $1,200. And it might help to try tracking your payment through the IRS portal first to make sure it’s really arriving through the mail.

Tracking your stimulus check through the US mail is also convenient if you experience any of these common problems with the IRS portal. A word of warning: If you’d rather set up direct deposit with the IRS, you need to do so by Wednesday, May 13 at 12 p.m. ET, or else a paper check will be your only option.

Tracking your mail starts with a free US Postal Service app and a service known as

Ecobee’s home security system puts smart sensors front and center

The Total Home Comfort and Security Bundle is a high-end home security and automation kit from Ecobee. At $499, it’s expensive — closest to the Nest Secure Alarm System in terms of style and price. But it’s a solid system that makes efficient use of each device and automates settings for you based on your phone’s location so you don’t have to remember to set arm or disarm modes. The system works with Alexa and Siri

Like

  • All of the devices perform multiple functions and work together to form a dynamic, multitasking system.
  • The automatic arming/disarming feature tied to my phone’s location worked reliably throughout testing.

Don’t Like

  • At $499, this kit isn’t cheap — and you have to pay a recurring monthly fee for some features that should be free.
  • It doesn’t offer professional monitoring, even if you pay the optional monthly fee for the Haven subscription service.

Ecobee doesn’t offer professional monitoring (yet) and you have to pay for the company’s optional Haven subscription service to use the auto-arm/disarm feature called Autopilot, as well as access the camera’s 14-day video clip storage in the Ecobee app.

Still, I like this system and recommend it, especially if you
